Nolan Wells' Family Pushes Back After Grand Jury Finds No Cause For Charges In His July Death

A Mississippi grand jury found insufficient evidence to bring charges in the death of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old college student whose body was found two days after a July 4 boating trip to Horn Island. The grand jury described the death as consistent with drowning despite bruising found on the back of Wells' head by both the state medical examiner and a forensic pathologist hired by his family, and said the cause of that trauma could not be determined.

District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath announced the findings Monday after a review that included 132 subpoenas and testimony from 43 witnesses, along with cellphone, GPS and video evidence. Wells' mother, Christine Wonsley, and family attorneys including Ben Crump rejected the conclusion, saying all other causes must be ruled out before certifying a death as drowning and that the investigation ended before determining what caused the trauma.
