The White House published an account of a U.S. Air Force officer, call sign DUDE 44 Bravo, shot down over Iran in April and rescued on Easter Sunday after ejecting behind enemy lines with his pilot, DUDE 44 Alpha.

Both aviators survived, and the release credits the recovery to a complex rescue operation. The account arrives via a 60 Minutes interview, repackaged by the administration as proof of its own policies on readiness and standards.

Two men came home alive, and that's worth every bit of the telling. What's odd is the part where a press office elbows into the picture and takes a bow for it, as though the policy memo went in with the helicopters. The people who flew that mission did the work. Somebody in an office read about it later and decided it proved him right.
