President Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered condolences on Aug. 28 over the death of Norway's King Harald V, 89, who died that afternoon after ascending the throne in 1991. Zelenskyy recalled the king's 2023 audience with him in Oslo and a wartime visit Harald made to a refugee reception center to meet displaced Ukrainians.

Zelenskyy's statement praised the king's 'dignity, wisdom, and unwavering commitment,' and said Ukraine would remember his solidarity during the war's darkest days. Harald is succeeded by his son, now King Haakon VIII.
