Michigan's Board of State Canvassers voted Monday, 3-0 with one Republican absent, to finalize ballot language for an initiative barring certain regulated utilities and government contractors from making political contributions and expanding campaign finance rules to more types of political communication. The measure, backed by Michiganders for Money Out of Politics, previously cleared the signature-verification threshold at a July 24 board meeting.

The Legislature now has 40 days to accept or reject the proposal outright; if it does neither, the measure goes before voters in November. An opposition group, Protect MI Free Speech, had challenged the initiative, though it did not respond to a request for comment on Monday's outcome.
