Attorney General Todd Blanche said Sunday the Justice Department may ask the Supreme Court to intervene after losing 22 cases to states that refused to hand over voter rolls containing names, birthdates, addresses, driver's license numbers and partial Social Security numbers. The requests stem from a Trump executive order and have produced lawsuits against 30 states and Washington, D.C.; federal judges in Oregon and Michigan are among those who sided with the states.

Notably, several of the states resisting include Republican-led ones like Idaho, Utah, Georgia and Vermont, whose governor has argued states are better positioned than Washington to run their own elections. Blanche framed the push as protecting "election integrity" and insisted the Justice Department is acting without political favor.

Separately, Blanche confirmed a controversial nearly $2 billion "anti-weaponization" fund tied to his confirmation deal with Senate Republicans is "dead," and defended his independence from Trump, his former personal defense attorney in the New York falsifying-business-records case.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An administration that has now lost this fight in court 22 times describes its posture as "running toward" election integrity, which is one way to describe running into the same wall two dozen times. That Republican governors are among those blocking the request suggests this isn't really a partisan skirmish — it's a federalism problem dressed up as a scandal. The attorney general's assurance that the president would never ask him to do anything unethical is, at minimum, doing a lot of unpaid overtime.
