Noah Arbit, Mark Bernstein join ‘Nonnegotiable’ Jewish Democrats with policy demands for El-Sayed

Seventeen additional Michigan Democrats, including state Rep. Noah Arbit and University of Michigan Regent Mark Bernstein, joined Nonnegotiable Michigan, a group pressing Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed to affirm commitments on Jewish safety and Israeli statehood. The group says El-Sayed has still not met its demands, first raised by rabbis and temple members concerned about his criticism of U.S.-Israel policy.

A rival group, Michigan Jews for Democracy, claims over 600 members and has already endorsed El-Sayed, including former Reps. Andy and Sander Levin. Prominent Democrats Haley Stevens and Dana Nessel have also endorsed him despite disagreements over Israel, while Nonnegotiable Michigan continues asking El-Sayed to state plainly whether Jewish safety is, as its name suggests, nonnegotiable.

Two groups claiming to speak for the same community have landed in opposite corners, and the candidate is still standing in the middle getting pelted from both sides. When advocacy groups start competing over who gets to define ‘nonnegotiable,’ you know the actual negotiating stopped a while back. The guy just has to answer a plain question, and nobody seems to want to let him answer it plainly.
