The White House released a presidential message marking Yom Kippur, offering well wishes to the Jewish community on what the message describes as the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

The statement invokes fasting, prayer, and charity, and adds a line pledging that the administration is resolved to defend every American's sacred right to freedom of religion.

The message closes with a blessing for renewed strength and abundant faith, addressed to the country generally.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A holiday note is a nice thing to send, and there's nothing wrong with wishing people well on a solemn day. But when the message slides from blessings into a pledge to defend a right nobody mentioned was under attack, you start to wonder who that line is really for. Most greeting cards don't come with a policy footnote.
