Colorado accuses immigrant detention center operator of blocking tuberculosis investigation

Colorado's health department sued GEO Group on Wednesday to force the company to cooperate with an investigation into a suspected tuberculosis outbreak at its Aurora immigrant detention facility. The state says GEO Group isolated one detainee after a June 11 report, allowed a single phone interview, then refused to hand over medical records or contact-tracing information — even as reports surfaced of at least 12 infections by mid-July.

Attorney General Philip Weiser's complaint notes the ill detainee was reportedly transferred to a Texas facility for deportation, which he called 'pressing' precedent for urgency, not an excuse to stop investigating. State law requires the health department to investigate communicable diseases, a process GEO Group cooperated with during a 2019 mumps outbreak and a 2024 tuberculosis case at the same facility. GEO Group and ICE did not respond to requests for comment.

Nothing says 'confidence in our infection control' like refusing to let public health officials see the paperwork. GEO Group managed to cooperate the last two times a contagious disease showed up in its facility, so the sudden stonewalling this time reads less like an oversight and more like a company that already knows what the records would show.
