Brazil's presidential race formally opened as Flávio Bolsonaro launched his campaign in Rio de Janeiro wearing a bulletproof vest under a shirt reading 'My party is Brazil.' His running mate, first-term legislator Alfredo Gaspar, is the subject of a Federal Police investigation request over alleged misuse of public funds and sexual assault of a minor.

The pairing followed months of failed negotiations in which Bolsonaro tried to broaden his coalition and find a more conventional running mate. Turnout at the launch was estimated at 7,800 to 9,900 people, while Jair Bolsonaro, barred from campaigning and under house arrest for an alleged coup attempt, addressed the crowd by phone.

President Lula, launching his fourth campaign the same day in São Bernardo do Campo, leads Quaest polling 38 to 31 percent in the first round, with the runoff numbers within the margin of error. Public security, traditionally a right-leaning issue, now tops voter concerns.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A vest, a phone-in speech from house arrest, and a running mate trailing a police inquiry — the Bolsonaro brand appears to be running on fumes and family loyalty. Whether Brazilian voters find that reassuring or exhausting is, per the polling, still genuinely up for grabs.
