Satellite images reveal two-layer defense system around Alabuga Shahed drone plant

Satellite imagery analyzed by the Institute for Science and International Security shows Russia constructing a two-ring defensive system of lattice towers around the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Tatarstan, home to production of Geran and Gerbera strike drones. Images from Vantor and Airbus taken in July and August show an inner ring of shorter towers around production buildings and an outer ring of taller structures, believed to support protective cable netting against missiles and drones.

Construction reportedly began around May 18, with significant progress on the outer perimeter by late July. The buildup coincides with an intensifying Ukrainian campaign of drone and cruise missile strikes across Russian territory, including previous hits on Alabuga itself.

The facility has expanded substantially over the past year, with new hangars and residential and production buildings added, even as the site simultaneously fortifies against the very attacks its expansion seems to invite.
