The Justice Department has asked to interview FBI officials involved in the 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago, part of a broader inquiry led by Trump ally Joe diGenova examining past investigations into Trump, four sources told Reuters. The stated aim is reportedly to establish that Trump was the victim of a criminal conspiracy against his own rights.

The search recovered more than 100 classified documents at the property and led to charges against Trump and two associates, later dismissed after a judge ruled special counsel Jack Smith had been unlawfully appointed; the DOJ dropped its appeal once Trump won the 2024 election. Now-Attorney General Todd Blanche, who once argued the search warrant itself was unlawful as Trump's defense lawyer, sits atop the department pursuing this new inquiry.

The probe had previously focused on the 2017 intelligence assessment concluding Russia sought to help Trump's 2016 campaign, interviewing current and former intelligence officials. It is unclear what charges, if any, investigators are pursuing regarding the Mar-a-Lago search itself.
