Second Amendment groups weigh in on Bryan Avila’s selection as Byron Donalds’ running mate

Byron Donalds picked state Sen. Bryan Avila as his running mate in Florida's governor's race, drawing praise from most Republicans but objections from Florida Gun Rights over Avila's 2018 vote for post-Parkland gun-safety legislation. That law raised the rifle purchase age to 21, banned bump stocks, added a waiting period, and created risk protection orders; it passed 67-50 with mixed party support.

Gun Owners of America, a separate group, said it isn't bothered since Donalds — not Avila — would set policy as governor and has vowed to repeal the Parkland law. Donalds himself voted against the original 2018 measure and touts that vote on the campaign trail.

Florida's other statewide Republican officials, including the CFO and attorney general, are also on record opposing the Parkland law, and party leaders including Gov. DeSantis have offered warm endorsements of Avila regardless.
