People close to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov received UAE passports after Russia invaded Ukraine, Anti-Corruption Foundation reports

The Anti-Corruption Foundation and independent outlet iStories report that Svetlana Polyakova, described as having a close personal relationship with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, received UAE citizenship in December 2022, months after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. Her daughter, Polina Kovaleva, got a UAE passport the same month through her employment.

Polyakova reportedly owns real estate worth more than 700 million rubles and has used private jets and properties belonging to sanctioned billionaire Oleg Deripaska. Kovaleva previously lived in London, studied at Imperial College Business School, and held a 999-year lease on a Kensington flat bought for £4.4 million before UK sanctions pushed her to relocate and take a job with Qatar Investment in Doha.

Funny how the people standing closest to the people making the speeches about sacrifice always seem to land on their feet somewhere with better weather. A passport from a country that never sanctioned anybody is about as subtle as buying flood insurance the week before you announce you're damming the river yourself. The rest of the country doesn't get that option.
