Bringing back Bali’s lost fireflies

Fireflies are vanishing from Bali as habitat loss, light pollution, pesticides and climate change take their toll on the island, mirroring a broader collapse across Southeast Asia.

Wayan Wardika launched Bring Back the Light in 2020, Indonesia's only firefly conservation project, breeding the insects with a small team of scientists for release into the wild.

The effort has pushed him toward habitat protection and persuading neighboring farmers to drop chemical pesticides for organic methods, on the theory that fireflies won't return to a landscape still being poisoned.
