Five European countries and the European Commission agreed on a joint response to a Trump administration request that they release strategic diesel reserves, Politico reported, after an emergency meeting on Oct. 1 involving the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Ireland.
A source told Politico Washington wants the EU to release 120 million barrels of diesel over six months, and could consider banning diesel exports if the EU refuses. Participants agreed to route any reserve decisions through the International Energy Agency while trying to avoid further friction with Washington.
Trump has repeatedly blamed Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries for the diesel squeeze, though analysts cited in the report point to other factors including the Iran war and shrinking global fuel stockpiles, and Kyiv has not confirmed Trump's claim that Zelenskyy agreed to slow the strikes.

Asking your allies to hand over their emergency fuel because your own price problem is pinching feels like borrowing a neighbor's spare tire because you would rather not buy one yourself. Europe's answer, in effect, is to form a committee and stall politely, which is its own kind of honest. Nobody in this story is wrong exactly, they are just all protecting their own tank.
