After Whitmer call, Trump administration lifts halt on invasive carp project

The Army Corps of Engineers lifted a stop-work order on the Brandon Road Interbasin Project after Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called President Trump on Wednesday and asked him to intervene. The project, aimed at keeping invasive carp out of the Great Lakes through a redesigned lock near Joliet, Illinois, had been halted since late July even as the fish were found just 80 miles from Lake Michigan.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker also pressed the White House, noting in a letter that his state had gone more than a month without a meaningful explanation for the stoppage. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission and the Alliance for the Great Lakes both underscored the stakes, tying the project to an $8 trillion regional economy and warning that any further disruption is unaffordable.

Whitmer's office confirmed the order was lifted, but the original justification for stopping construction in the first place remains unexplained.

A project two states, the federal government, and the fish themselves all agree is urgent got shut down for over a month, and it took a governor personally dialing the president to turn the lights back on. That's not how infrastructure is supposed to work, that's how a stalled lawnmower works, you jiggle something and hope the engine catches. Nobody's said why it stopped, which means nobody's promised it won't stop again the next time somebody isn't in a talking mood.
