No recommendations on autism care as task force completes second meeting

A Florida legislative task force reviewing Medicaid-funded autism therapy spent Monday's session on applied behavior analysis data, hearing that recipients average 32.5 months in the program, with about 10,000 people receiving services five-plus years and 8,000 receiving them under six months. The panel, created in this year's budget, must deliver recommendations to the Legislature by Dec. 31.

Federal officials described a new 173-page CMS toolkit on Medicaid ABA services, which a CMS deputy director conceded carries no binding legal or regulatory weight — states can simply ignore it. The chair floated finishing recommendations by October but stopped short of committing to that timeline.

A blue-ribbon panel handed a December deadline is, in August, still in 'information-gathering mode,' guided by a federal toolkit that everyone involved admits nobody has to follow. Families waiting on this process might reasonably wonder whether 'gathering information' is doing double duty as 'not deciding anything.'
