House Republican leaders scrapped Thursday's session, sending lawmakers home early and postponing a floor vote on Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie's impeachment articles against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Massie accuses Hegseth of violating the War Powers Resolution over Iran, plus extrajudicial killings at sea and the seizure of Nicolas Maduro. The House won't reconvene until Nov. 9, after the midterms.

Massie says he saw it coming, noting leadership canceled two weeks of session after his Epstein files discharge petition. Democrats, led by Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. Yassamin Ansari, blasted the early exit as Republicans running out the clock rather than face a vote.

Recent polling shows Democrats leading by as much as 11 points for House control, with Trump's unpopularity cited as a factor. The Senate stays in session through Oct. 1, leaving the House alone in its extended absence.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
You can tell a lot about a man by which chores he suddenly remembers when the hard one comes due. Leadership didn't beat the vote, they just moved the calendar out of its way, and they'd already done the same trick once this year, so nobody can pretend it was a fresh idea. The Senate managed to stay at work. Turns out the building wasn't the problem.
