Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state Cabinet voted Friday, in a process lasting under two minutes, to approve a rule letting the Florida Department of Law Enforcement designate groups as domestic or foreign terrorist organizations. The vote sets up the state to designate the Council on American Islamic Relations, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Antifa, following recommendations FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass delivered more than two months ago.

The underlying law, HB 1471, bars state funds from supporting designated groups, prohibits schools from maintaining programs that 'promote' them, and requires colleges to report students on visas who do the same, with expulsion as a possible consequence. The ACLU and allied legal groups representing CAIR have already sued, and a federal judge issued a temporary injunction blocking DeSantis's earlier executive-order attempt at the same designation in December.

Glass told the Cabinet the rule addresses 'imminent dangers' from terrorist groups; DeSantis moved to approve without elaboration. The state has also floated designating more than 90 foreign groups, including cartels and the IRGC, alongside CAIR and Antifa.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Two minutes. That's less time than it takes to settle on a paint color for the porch, and here it's enough to hang the word terrorist on a civil rights outfit and call the matter closed. A federal judge already told them no once, back in December, which ought to have been a hint about how the next round goes. When the danger is that imminent, you'd think somebody on the Cabinet might have had a follow-up question.
