Republican Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly clashed over Labor Day weekend about debate scheduling, with Donalds accusing Jolly of running a low-visibility campaign and Jolly countering that Donalds pulled out of a planned joint appearance at the Tampa Tiger Bay Club. A club board member confirmed Donalds' campaign backed out of the joint event, then a solo one, sending running mate Bryan Avila instead.
Donalds compared Jolly's approach to Biden's 2020 campaign and other Democratic winners who avoided open forums, while a source close to Donalds said the Tiger Bay date was never actually confirmed on their end.
Both campaigns say debate planning is underway, though Jolly said there's been no real communication between camps yet. Jolly added he wants a substantive format rather than one built for social media clips.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Two candidates for governor spent a holiday weekend arguing about who's more available to debate, which is its own kind of answer. When the fight is over who cancelled the debate about debating, the voters watching from the picnic table already know how seriously to take the promise that debates are coming. Eight weeks is a long time to keep saying soon.
