The Justice Department gave California election officials 48 hours to remove voters it labeled suspected noncitizens, using a list delivered on a thumb drive to Los Angeles County, and to withhold or segregate their mail ballots.
Acting deputy attorney general R. Trent McCotter threatened emergency legal action if the state didn't comply by noon Thursday, without disclosing how many people are on the list or how the department determined their citizenship status.
Federal courts have repeatedly blocked similar DOJ efforts to obtain or use state voter rolls, and a judge ruled against the department's use of voter data just last week; the Supreme Court separately blocked a Trump effort to restrict mail voting.
Voting rights advocates and a California mobilization group called the demand an attack on voters generally, while California officials had not yet responded publicly to the letters.
