Annual planetary wellness check shows Earth turning for the worse

The 2026 Planetary Health Check, compiled by more than 60 scientists under Germany's Potsdam Institute, found seven of nine 'Planetary Boundaries' transgressed, at their worst levels yet recorded. The breached categories include climate change, biosphere integrity, land system change, freshwater change and ocean acidification.

Lead author Boris Sakschewski called the diagnosis 'unambiguous,' pointing to this year's South Asian monsoon floods, record ocean temperatures, and heat waves across Western Europe, East Asia and the Middle East. Researcher Levke Caesar identified climate and biosphere integrity as the two 'core' boundaries, since damage to either can reshape the whole system.

Two boundaries, stratospheric ozone and atmospheric aerosol loading, remain within safe limits, which Caesar called genuinely good news, and evidence that international cooperation can reverse planetary-scale problems when it actually happens.

Seven out of nine failing grades is the kind of report card that gets a kid grounded, but the planet doesn't get grounded, it just keeps running the experiment on us. The ozone layer's recovery is proof the fix is possible when people actually do the work instead of just measuring the damage. Right now we're mostly still measuring.
