A local ceasefire mediated by the IAEA took effect Sept. 5 near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, allowing Ukrainian specialists to begin repairing the 330-kilovolt Ferrosplavna-1 power line damaged by fighting on Aug. 20. The plant's reactors have been running on emergency diesel generators since the damage occurred.

The IAEA warned the plant is now low on diesel and faces total power loss within days unless external electricity is restored or more fuel arrives at the site, which sits in an active combat zone. This marks the seventh such local ceasefire around the plant since the invasion began, part of a recurring pattern of blackouts, 27 of them by Energoatom's count as of Aug. 20.
