The BBC filed a new motion seeking dismissal of President Trump's $10 billion defamation suit over a 2024 documentary that spliced his Jan. 6 speech, arguing Florida's federal court has no jurisdiction since the film wasn't made or aired there. The broadcaster says Trump cannot name a single Florida viewer and that it actively worked to block unauthorized U.S. streams.

The BBC also leans on the calendar: Trump won Florida by 13 points and had already been indicted over Jan. 6 before the documentary aired, undercutting claims of electoral harm. It further argues the edited clip is protected opinion on a matter of public concern, noting BBC Chairman Samir Shah already apologized for an 'error of judgment' — an apology that did not stop the lawsuit.

The filing arrives after a magistrate judge ordered Trump to disclose financial records from his revocable trust, covering more than 400 business entities, as part of BBC's discovery request.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A network apologizing for sloppy editing while fighting a ten-figure lawsuit is its own small comedy, but the real spectacle is a plaintiff who carried the state in question by double digits still insisting he was grievously wounded there. Discovery into 400 business entities suggests this case may end up being less about journalism than about paperwork nobody wanted opened.
