Two German polls released this month show the AfD at record highs, 29% in a YouGov survey and 30% in one from the GMS Polling Institute, while Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU/CSU alliance has fallen to historic lows of 18% and 20% respectively. The surveys came about a week after the AfD's decisive win in the Saxony-Anhalt state election.

Merz canceled a planned trip to New York for the UN General Assembly to stay in Berlin amid internal pressure within his own party. A separate poll shows the AfD also leading ahead of an upcoming state election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on September 20.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When a chancellor cancels a trip to the United Nations to go manage his own back porch, that tells you which fire is bigger. Two different pollsters landing on the same story is usually a sign the story is real, not a fluke. The CDU can call this a bad week if it wants, but a party sliding this far this fast usually isn't having a week, it's having a season.
