The Supreme Court refused to lift a lower court injunction against Trump's Postal Service mail-ballot verification rule, keeping it frozen through the November midterms. Trump's April executive order sought voter data lists from states, secure barcoded envelopes, and withheld federal funding for noncompliant states, all justified by unproven claims of election fraud.

Thomas and Alito dissented, with Alito arguing the Postal Service's regulatory authority and fraud-detection interest outweighed implementation concerns. Kavanaugh concurred separately, conceding the rule might fall within USPS authority in principle but calling its rollout before the 2026 election 'arbitrary and capricious' given the timeline. Democratic officials from 23 states and D.C. called the technical demands 'herculean,' warning of an 'unmitigated disaster,' and the government did not rebut those specifics.

Even the rule's defenders on the bench couldn't say it was ready, only that it might someday be legal in some tidier world with more calendar to spare. That's a strange hill to die on: not whether the thing works, just whether it's allowed to exist. Fifty days before an election is a rough time to introduce a new online portal nobody's tested, and three justices knew it even while arguing the other side.
