Tanzania suspends paper after report on ruling party divisions

Tanzania's Information Ministry suspended the newspaper Mwanahalisi for six months, print and digital, after it reported alleged tension between Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi and President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Officials justified the shutdown by noting Nchimbi wasn't interviewed, an information-minister quote wasn't independently confirmed, and a photo caption misidentified him — objections that arrived only after the story ran, not before it did.

This follows an earlier warning to the same outlet for a headline questioning whether Hassan had drifted from her 2021 reform image, and the ministry has now also summoned a second newspaper, Jamvi la Habari, to explain itself.

Tanzania ranks 117th of 180 countries for press freedom, a ranking that this sequence of events does nothing to complicate.

A six-month death sentence for a newspaper over an uninterviewed vice president and a misfiled caption is not media law enforcement, it's a demonstration of who gets to decide what counts as balanced. The regime that once won praise for loosening Magufuli-era restrictions is now running the same playbook with better branding. Summoning a second paper before the ink dries on the first suspension isn't subtle either.
