Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin during BRICS summit talks in New Delhi that dialogue and diplomacy are the path to resolving conflicts, according to the Hindustan Times. The two leaders also discussed Black Sea shipping dangers after at least five Indian sailors were killed in recent attacks on merchant vessels there, prompting India to lodge protests with both Moscow and Kyiv.

This is Modi's third documented appeal to Putin to end the war since last year, following meetings in Bishkek in August and earlier sessions in 2024. He has repeatedly called Putin 'my friend' while also visiting Ukraine in 2024 and telling President Zelenskyy that negotiations were needed.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Modi's been saying the same gentle thing to Putin for going on two years now, like a neighbor who keeps asking the fellow with the loud dog to please keep it down. The dog is still barking, the sailors are still getting killed in the Black Sea, and the friendship stays warm regardless. Words are cheap when you're not the one paying for the war.
