A U.S. embassy employee was removed from Britain following a dawn raid tied to a child abuse images investigation, according to reporting by The Sun that Newsweek could not independently verify in full. British police confirmed U.S. authorities notified them on August 25 about a probe into suspected offenses involving indecent images of children in London.

The Sun reports U.S. authorities sought a court order stateside, raided the man's London residence, discovered images, took him into custody despite lacking arrest powers in the U.K., and flew him out via a U.S. air base. His brother allegedly sent him the abusive material, per the report.

The U.S. Embassy says it is aware of the allegations and expects personnel to meet 'the highest standards of conduct.' The U.K. government confirmed a U.S. investigation is ongoing but declined further comment, while an extradition lawyer noted that if formal extradition was deliberately bypassed, that 'would raise very serious questions about the legality of the operation.'

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Nobody disputes there was a raid, nobody disputes the man is gone, and nobody in either government seems eager to explain how he left. When the official line is 'we take these allegations seriously' and the practical result is a guy vanishing on a military plane, the seriousness looks awfully convenient. A country that expects its own diplomats to follow foreign law when posted abroad might want to hold itself to the same standard when the traffic runs the other way.
