New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman told a podcast that White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller functions as the de facto center of gravity in the Trump administration, describing him as arguably the most powerful West Wing staffer in decades.
Haberman said Miller presents himself in meetings as the last word on what the president wants, and that officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Todd Blanche have had to treat him as someone to work with or fear crossing.
She added that Miller's wife, podcaster Katie Miller, has become a power center in her own right that some officials are afraid to cross, despite her show lacking a large listener base.

You can tell a lot about who really runs a place by who everybody tiptoes around, not by who has the fancy title on the door. A podcast nobody listens to being a source of White House dread says less about the podcast and more about how thin the ice is under everybody else. When the treasury secretary and the FBI director are reportedly managing their relationship with a married couple's feelings, that is not a strong chain of command, that is a household.
