Yevhen Mahda of Ukraine's Institute for World Policy said President Trump has failed to apply meaningful pressure on Vladimir Putin to end the war, noting Trump has not even criticized Russia rhetorically. Mahda said Trump could simply echo Reagan-era language calling Russia heir to the Soviet empire, but has not done so.

The comments follow a September 22 meeting where Trump told reporters he believed Putin was ready to meet at the leadership level and wanted the war to end. Zelenskyy called the meeting positive and productive but said he still has no concrete answer on US Patriot missile supplies for winter, and urged Trump to use Chinese President Xi Jinping's influence on Putin.

Optimistic adjectives are cheap and Patriot missiles are not, and Ukraine is still waiting on the expensive part. Calling a meeting productive doesn't move a single air defense battery closer to the front. Words about Putin being ‘ready to meet' are not the same as words that cost Moscow anything.
