President Trump posted on Truth Social Monday that oil prices will drop ‘precipitously’ to as low as under two dollars a gallon once the U.S. ‘wins’ the war with Iran, a conflict he launched in February. Critics noted the statement implicitly concedes the war has not yet been won, despite Trump's repeated past claims of victory.
Former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene mocked the post, noting gas prices are at record highs for Labor Day weekend and diesel is nearing six dollars a gallon. Rep. Ted Lieu and an Eurasia Group analyst separately pointed out the contradiction between Trump's past claims that Iran was ‘totally destroyed’ and his new framing of a war still awaiting a win.

When a man tells you the price will come way down as soon as the job's finished, it's worth asking who told you last spring the job was already finished. Two dollars a gallon is a fine number to say out loud on a holiday weekend when the sign at the pump says something else entirely. You can promise cheap gas or you can promise a war that's over. Promising both in one sitting is how you end up owing the customer twice.
