Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama told the German newspaper Welt that the European Union is making promises to Ukraine about membership that cannot be kept under the bloc's existing accession rules, calling the standard path a dead end. He proposed instead bringing Ukraine to the table now and granting membership based on performance against conditions, while also tightening requirements elsewhere.
Rama also said he'd scrap national vetoes entirely, arguing a single country should not be able to block decisions for the whole bloc, a position with some irony given Hungary has spent months doing exactly that to Ukraine's own accession clusters. Kyiv's deputy PM says Ukraine is technically ready to open its remaining clusters; Hungary has repeatedly declined to agree.

Rama is an odd messenger for plain talk, seeing as Albania has been waiting at the EU's door for over a decade itself. But credit where due: he said the thing everyone in Brussels mutters privately, that the membership track as built was never designed to actually deliver. A club that keeps extending the invitation while hiding the guest list isn't being coy, it's just not that into having you over.
