Poland scrambled military aircraft overnight on October 9 after Russia launched a drone attack on western Ukraine, the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command said, putting ground-based air defense and radar systems on high alert.

About an hour later the operation ended, with the Polish military stating no violations of its airspace had occurred.

Separately, Russian strike drones hit Ukraine overnight, including a strike that killed a man in Ivano-Frankivsk.

Poland has run this drill often enough that an hour sounds almost routine, which is its own kind of grim. The jets go up, the statement goes out, the all-clear comes down, and somewhere a family is burying someone because the drone that did not cross into Poland still found somebody in Ukraine. Routine is a word that should never get comfortable sitting next to overnight drone attack.
