A DHS Office of Inspector General report published Friday found fentanyl seizures dropped 39% in the first year of the second Trump administration after Homeland Security Investigations shifted staff hours toward immigration enforcement.

Fentanyl investigation hours fell more than 250,000 hours, or 31%, in fiscal 2025 compared with the prior year, while immigration enforcement hours rose over 1.7 million hours, an increase of more than 800%.

At one HSI office, 99% of work went to immigration cases, shrinking a seven-agent drug team to three; ICE agreed with the inspector general's recommendation to review staffing but does not expect to complete the fix until June 2027.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An agency ostensibly dedicated to stopping the drug driving the country's overdose crisis quietly became an immigration shop instead, and the paperwork trail proves it rather than any press conference. The fix, naturally, is scheduled to arrive in 2027, which is a very efficient way of saying not now. Priorities, it turns out, are just staffing hours with better branding.
