Decline of migratory birds spurs calls for coordinated conservation

Conservationists gathered in Nairobi from Sept. 8-11 for the Global Flyways Summit, where BirdLife International's new report found 45% of migratory bird species declining and one in nine facing extinction, driven by habitat loss, hunting, pollution and climate change. More than 100 organizations signed the Nairobi Flyways Declaration pledging to fold flyway conservation into development planning.

Development banks pledged real money: the Asian Development Bank committed $3 billion over a decade for wetlands, and Latin America's development bank pledged $3-5 billion through 2050. The World Bank's environment director noted that international birding tourism is worth $70 billion globally, with Africa currently capturing only a sliver of it.

Money pledged through 2050 is the kind of promise a fence post could keep, since nobody signing it will be around to answer for it either way. The birds don't care about declarations, they care about wetlands still being wet next spring. Ask again in a decade whether the $70 billion in birdwatching money actually reached the marsh instead of the conference hotel.
