Researchers tracking African wild dogs in Zambia found that three litter-mates, dubbed the Mayukuyuku males, wandered roughly 4,126 kilometers over nine months after leaving Kafue National Park in mid-2025, looping past Kitwe and Ndola before settling near the Luangwa River Valley.
The study, covering 19 GPS-collared packs, found wild dogs regularly cross into neighboring countries and connect otherwise isolated populations across Southern Africa. Not every journey ends well: one female traveling with her sisters was killed in a snare set for game meat after covering more than 2,300 kilometers.
Scientists say the findings argue for conservation approaches that let wildlife corridors and human land use coexist, including tourism and regulated game ranching.

Three brothers walk two and a half thousand miles to find a home and a girlfriend, and somehow that is less complicated than a lot of human real estate searches. The tragic part is what waits in the grass for the ones who don't make it, snares set for supper meat that don't ask which species steps in first. Conservation people keep saying the same sensible thing, that you don't have to choose between people and animals, and it keeps not quite landing with whoever's in charge of the budget.
