After Trump and Zelensky meet in New York, Ukrainian president says he hopes war will end ‘before winter’

Trump and Zelensky held roughly 40 minutes of talks on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, covering negotiations with Russia, military aid, and a possible energy truce. Trump told the U.N. he expects the war to end sooner than people realize; Zelensky, who two weeks earlier told Trump's envoys he expected fighting to continue into winter, now says he hopes it ends before then too.

Zelensky asked Trump for Patriot missiles from U.S. stockpiles, offering to later hand over part of a future German-brokered delivery in exchange; Trump did not agree but also didn't reject it outright, which Zelensky called a good step. The Kremlin says there are no preconditions for talks yet, and spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the idea of a Zelensky meeting without prior expert groundwork as a waste of time, insisting any summit happen in Moscow.

Rubio was set to meet Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov the next day in New York to continue energy-truce discussions, according to the State Department.
