Joe Scarborough used his Tuesday broadcast to react to President Trump telling a Nebraska rally crowd that high fuel prices were a small price to pay for safety, adding that Iran could 'take out' Los Angeles or San Diego.

Scarborough challenged the idea that the remark was a joke, asking which American president since the Civil War had joked about the destruction of entire cities. He also drew a comparison to Trump's past mockery of the attack on Paul Pelosi.

The White House later said Trump meant the cities would have been at risk if action hadn't been taken, a clarification that recasts a comment about letting cities be destroyed as a comment about preventing it.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When the cleanup crew has to explain that a line about losing two cities was really about saving them, you can bet the first version was the honest one. A president ought to be able to talk about gas prices in Nebraska without putting San Diego on the table. The White House can mop all it likes, but everybody already heard it hit the floor.
