A federal court in Alabama granted an emergency request allowing a high school student to keep playing football after the superintendent and the state athletic association tried to remove him from the varsity team.

The student, who says he holds a scholarship offer to play at Texas A&M-Texarkana, was pulled after being kicked out of his mother's home, which raised enrollment eligibility questions for school officials.

A hearing on his motion for a preliminary injunction is set for Sept. 17.

A kid loses his housing and the first instinct of the people running the league is to check his eligibility paperwork rather than his address. The court stepped in fast, which is the good news here, but it shouldn't have needed to. Somebody's rulebook clearly doesn't have a line item for a teenager sleeping somewhere new every week.
