South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said several Russian military aircraft briefly entered the country's air defense identification zone near the Dokdo and Ulleung islets on Aug. 25, prompting South Korea to scramble fighter jets as a precaution. The military said it detected the aircraft before entry and confirmed no South Korean airspace was actually violated, since an ADIZ is not sovereign airspace but a self-declared identification buffer.

The incident follows a similar case in late June when roughly ten Chinese and Russian aircraft entered the same zone, drawing a formal protest from Seoul's Ministry of National Defense. It also comes amid separate reports of North Korean missile tests and a scaled-back joint U.S.-South Korea military exercise.
