‘The Sigh of the Earth’: Fragments from communities overlooked after Venezuela’s earthquakes

A seismic doublet struck Venezuela's northern coast on June 24, 2026, devastating La Guaira and Caracas while also damaging Valencia, Morón, and Boca de Aroa. La Guaira, home to roughly 400,000 people, absorbed the bulk of global coverage, with damage estimated by the World Bank at USD 19.6 billion and a death toll in the thousands.

Away from that epicenter, Morón counted 60 affected families and nine fatalities, while Boca de Aroa documented 87 damaged homes, 252 displaced residents, and 128 homes later declared uninhabitable. A photography and video project, 'The Sigh of the Earth,' assembles images, chat screenshots, seismic data, and sound from these overlooked communities rather than the widely broadcast rubble of the capital.

The project's creator notes that Venezuela's earthquake risk was flagged as far back as 2005, and that housing regulation failures long predate this disaster.
