Arizona secretary of state candidates Adrian Fontes and Alexander Kolodin clashed in a debate where Kolodin, who has pushed to eliminate no-excuse mail voting and signed onto the 2020 'kraken' lawsuit, refused to clarify his current position while Fontes accused him of wanting to end it entirely.

Kolodin promised election-night results and touted Prop. 144, a measure requiring mail voters to show ID each time without specifying how, while Fontes argued it would make voting less convenient and said Arizona spends far less per ballot than Florida because lawmakers like Kolodin won't fund administration.

Kolodin cited a Maricopa County investigation that found eight improperly registered noncitizens out of 200 initial suspects as evidence of voter roll problems, while Fontes said he's sought funding to modernize those rolls and been refused; the debate also included Kolodin accusing Fontes of cartel ties and Fontes calling Kolodin a 'wild-eyed fanatic.'

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Eight improperly registered voters out of two hundred suspects is the kind of number that ought to calm a person down, not send them further up the wall. Instead you get a man who spent 2020 trying to toss out a state's results now auditioning to run the next one, while refusing to say what he thinks about the system three-quarters of Arizonans actually use. That's not a debate about election security, that's a man trying to walk backward through a door he already kicked down.
