How students at Colorado State helped teach their community to stop talking past each other and manage complex problems

Colorado State University's Center for Public Deliberation has run more than 500 community forums over 20 years, training students to facilitate structured discussions on local issues like dispensary zoning. The center's founder, a communication studies professor, built the model on research showing humans are prone to confirmation bias and prefer simple narratives with villains over engaging complex tradeoffs.

The center's first major project engaged over 600 participants across six nights of forums on school district reorganization. Students are trained to act as impartial analysts rather than advocates, producing discussion guides that lay out multiple approaches to a given problem before facilitating public dialogue.
