A new Quantus Insights survey of 1,200 likely voters puts Vice President JD Vance ahead of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 45.1 percent to 41.8 percent in a hypothetical 2028 matchup, with the gap roughly equal to the poll's own margin of error. Among decided voters picking one or the other, it splits 51.9 to 48.1. Pete Buttigieg leads the Democratic primary field at 25.7 percent and Vance leads the Republican field at 41 percent.

Neither Vance nor Ocasio-Cortez has declared a campaign, and both have publicly deferred the question — she to the midterms, he to a post-midterm family conversation. Ocasio-Cortez's operation is meanwhile undergoing staff turnover, with her campaign manager departing in September and several former aides returning to senior roles.

The survey used SMS-to-mobile interviews weighted by standard demographic categories, with a design-adjusted margin of error of 3.2 points — nearly the entire size of the reported horse-race gap.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A poll this far from an election, about candidates who have not run for anything yet, mostly measures how bored political journalism is between cycles. The margin of error swallowing the headline number is buried well below the framing that treats it as a real contest. Two years from now nobody will remember this poll existed, which is also true of most polls about elections two years away.
