Pew: Young Americans grow more wary of AI as job fears rise

A Pew Research Center survey released Tuesday found 55% of Americans aged 18 to 29 are now more concerned than excited about AI, up from 47% last year and 31% in 2021. Only about one in ten young adults say they feel more excited than worried, down from a quarter five years ago.

Job anxiety appears to be driving the shift: 73% of adults under 30 now expect AI to reduce the number of jobs, up from 61% just last year, bringing their views in line with older age groups. Overall, 71% of American adults expect AI to shrink the job market over the next two decades, while just 5% think it will create more work.

Pew also found roughly half of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots regularly, up from about a third two years ago, with young adults leading adoption even as they lead the retreat from optimism.

Nobody selling AI products seems eager to explain why the people using the tools most are also the people most convinced those tools are coming for their paychecks. Usage and enthusiasm decoupling this cleanly is not a marketing problem the industry can chatbot its way out of.
