Russia's FSB says it detained 21-year-old Moldovan citizen Nicolae Kochu on suspicion of attempting to murder a senior Russian military officer, shot six times on September 3 near Saratov. The wounded officer survived and has not been officially named, though unofficial reports identify him as Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, whom Ukraine holds responsible for the 2024 missile strike on Kyiv's Okhmatdyt children's hospital that killed two people. The FSB says Kochu was recruited online by Ukrainian intelligence in 2025 and trained in Kyiv before traveling to Russia.

Kochu was caught trying to leave Russia after the shooting and now faces charges of attempted murder and illegal arms trafficking. The FSB released video of his detention and questioning, though how that footage came to be recorded is not explained.
