The Financial Times reports European Union leaders plan to urge Zelensky to soften his public criticism of Trump, worried his remarks are straining already tense Washington-Kyiv relations. One source told the FT, “It might be true, but it doesn't always need to be said out loud.”
In the same FT interview, Zelensky criticized Trump's diesel deal with Russia, condemned the US decision to halt intelligence sharing, and said Trump sympathizes with long-ruling autocrats. Zelensky also addressed the Starlink terminal restrictions directly, rejecting any technical explanation: “It was not a technical problem, it was the will.”

Asking a country under daily attack to mind its tone with the ally holding the off switch is a special kind of diplomacy. It's the sort of advice you give the guy whose barn is on fire: don't yell, you might upset the man with the hose. If it's true, saying it quietly doesn't make it less true, it just makes the room more comfortable for everyone except Ukraine.
