Long Island official gets new sentence in corruption case

Edward Mangano, former Nassau County executive, was resentenced to 10 years in prison after an appeals court threw out part of his corruption conviction for lack of evidence. He was originally sentenced to 12 years and ordered to pay $10.6 million in restitution plus fines and forfeitures over bribes from a restaurateur seeking loan guarantees for concessions he ran at a beach and golf course.

The bribes reportedly included a no-show marketing job paying Mangano's wife more than $450,000, along with vacations, flooring, and a massage chair. Linda Mangano's own obstruction conviction for lying to the FBI about that job was upheld, as was her husband's conviction on honest services fraud and obstruction charges.

Ten years is still ten years, even after the appeals court took a red pen to part of the indictment. A no-show job and a massage chair are not subtle ways to launder a favor, they are the kind of thing that shows up in a courtroom exhibit with a photo attached. The sentence changed, the picture of how this works did not.
