Out-Of-Control Reno Wildfire Forces Thousands To Evacuate

The Hawk Fire near Reno, Nevada grew to more than 23 square miles with zero containment as of Sunday, prompting evacuation orders for roughly 42,000 residents and warnings for another 45,000. At least six people, three first responders and three civilians, were injured, and officials said the fire was human-caused without detailing how they determined that or whether it was intentional.

Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency and mobilized National Guard helicopters and 60 troops alongside 800 fire personnel. Nearly 10,000 customers remained without power Sunday, down from 60,000 the day before, and portions of U.S. Route 395 were closed.

Resident Cari Kieffer said her family's home was destroyed after an evacuation-tracking app lagged behind the fire's actual advance, giving them false confidence the blaze wouldn't reach their neighborhood. They escaped with a handful of belongings, including a Bible and wedding photos, but lost birth certificates and childhood photos in the rush.
